Evolution as a narrative in teaching biology

What is life? This question is the starting point not for a philosophy lecture, but for the newly designed Bachelor’s degree programme in biology at ETH Zurich. With it, the department is embarking on an entirely new path.

Revealing connections
“By aligning our material to the history of organism development, we can focus more on highlighting general principles and interdependencies and less on teaching disconnected facts”, Julia Vorholt, Professor of Microbiology and member of the Swiss Plant Science Center, explains the new orientation. Vorholt initiated the curriculum reform and heads up the project in the department.
