CARDEVOL - New ERC Starting Grant for Tobias Zust

Lipaphis Tobias Zust

Although plants produce chemical toxins as a defence against insect herbivores, herbivores frequently evolve resistance to such chemicals. The CARDEVOL (CARDenolide EVOLution) projects aims to understand the causes and consequences of plant evolving new chemical defences as a strategy to prevent herbivore resistance. By quantifiying costs and benefits of toxin production for the plant, and exploring tolerance mechanism of insects, CARDEVOL will provide a comprehensive and interdisciplinary evaluation of chemically mediated plant-insect coevolution.
